Pride Month w/ Portland Lesbian Choir -A Roof and a Bed Virtual Concert

June 5, 2021 – June 30, 2021 all-day
Portland Lesbian Choir

The Portland Lesbian Choir’s summer concert, “A Roof and a Bed” is now available to watch on Youtube! The Portland Lesbian Choir has been planning this concert for 3 years. Started in 2018, two new composers wrote new music for PLC to premiere.

Giselle Wyers, well-known choral composer and conductor from the University of Washington, is the composer of “A Roof and A Bed”. The text of this multi-section work comes from three poems published in “Beloved Community”, a poetry anthology compiled by WHEEL (Women’s Housing Equality and Enhancement League) in Seattle. Ms. Wyers has written music that artfully portrays both the hopelessness and hope of the authors of this powerful poetry.

Kim Horenstein, long-time PLC member, section lead, accompanist, and now Assistant Director, has composed “Brandon’s Journey Home”. This piece is written in honor of Kim and her wife Mary’s son who after the joy of finding a home, struggled in his later teenage years with paranoia and left home. This powerful piece reflects on the role mental illness plays in houselessness.

PLC is highlighting Rose Haven’s work in the video production! PLC has supported Rose Haven with donations of essential goods and by spreading awareness of the intersecting issues affecting homelessness.

Founded in 1986, the Portland Lesbian Choir is the first and oldest lesbian identified choral group in the U.S. The Choir exists to build community and harmony through musical excellence, service, and advocacy. With 100 singers, 350 alumni, and audiences of 700 people, we sing to bear witness to the power of music to transform our world through thought-provoking concerts.

You may view the concert on Youtube titled, “PLC Presents – A Roof and A Bed”. All songs are closed captioned and ASL will be available for four pieces!
